Deep Research AI Tools Compared: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude
Deep research AI tools take a question, spend several minutes searching and reading dozens of web pages, and return a long report with citations. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity and Claude all offer a version, and they differ more in plan access, output format and how easy they make it to check sources than in the basic idea. This comparison is for freelancers and small business owners who want to know which one to use for market research, competitor scans or background reading.
Quick verdict
- Try it free first: ChatGPT's pricing page lists limited deep research on its Free plan, and Gemini makes it available to free users subject to demand. Check Perplexity's own plan page for its current free access.
- You already pay for ChatGPT Plus: use ChatGPT deep research; it's included.
- You live in Google Docs: Gemini Deep Research fits well and offers extra ways to reuse the report, such as Audio Overviews.
- You pay for Claude: Claude's Research feature is included on paid plans.
Whichever you pick, budget time to check the citations. That's where most of the real work remains.
How we compared ChatGPT deep research vs Gemini Deep Research and others
This is desk research. In October 2026 we read each vendor's official pages: OpenAI's deep research announcement and help pages, Google's Gemini Deep Research overview and Gemini Apps help on limits, Perplexity's Deep Research announcement and help center, and Anthropic's support article on Claude Research. We compared plan access, documented features and output options. We didn't run the same brief through all four tools, so we don't rank them on accuracy.
Side-by-side comparison table
| ChatGPT deep research | Gemini Deep Research | Perplexity Deep Research | Claude Research | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free access | Yes, limited (expanded on Plus) | Available, may be paused at high demand | Check Perplexity's plan page | No, paid plans only |
| Paid access | Higher limits on paid plans | Higher limits on AI Plus, Pro, Ultra | Higher limits on Pro | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise |
| Output | Cited report in chat | Multi-page cited report; Canvas and Audio Overviews | Cited report | Cited report in chat |
| Best for | ChatGPT users, mixed topics | Google users, reports to reuse | Fast, citation-forward answers | Claude users, work context |
Plan details are as of October 2026, per each vendor's help or pricing pages. Exact query allowances change often, so we haven't listed numbers that might be out of date by the time you read this.
ChatGPT deep research
OpenAI built deep research to work through a question for several minutes and produce a report with citations. It's available across plans, with paid plans getting more uses, and OpenAI has said that when you reach the full version's limit, a lighter version can take over. In ChatGPT agent mode, deep research is combined with the ability to act on websites; see our guide to ChatGPT agent mode for that side.
Gemini Deep Research
Google describes Deep Research as producing detailed multi-page reports, which you can turn into other formats in Canvas or listen to as an Audio Overview. Google's help center says paid Google AI subscribers get higher limits and that free users may find it unavailable at busy times.
Perplexity
Perplexity built its product around cited answers, and Deep Research extends that into longer reports. Perplexity's help center blocked our reader, so check its plan pages for current free and Pro allowances.
Which deep research AI tools fit your situation
- Market or competitor scan for a new product: any of the four will do a first pass. Pair it with our guide to AI competitor analysis for the follow-up steps.
- Background reading for a business plan: use whichever tool you already pay for, then verify every figure you put in the plan. Our guide to writing a business plan with AI covers that process.
- Quick fact-finding with sources in view: Perplexity is built around showing citations next to the answer.
Claude Research
Anthropic's support pages say Research is available on paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise) on web, desktop and mobile. It runs multiple searches and returns a cited answer. If your team already uses Claude for writing, it saves switching tools.
Pricing and free-tier limits
All four vendors change their allowances regularly, and some tie limits to overall plan usage rather than a fixed count. As of October 2026:
- ChatGPT: the Free plan lists limited deep research and Plus lists expanded deep research, per OpenAI's pricing page.
- Gemini: free access is subject to demand; AI Plus, Pro and Ultra get progressively higher limits, per Google's Gemini Apps help.
- Perplexity: we couldn't load Perplexity's help center to confirm current free and Pro allowances, so check its plan pages directly.
- Claude: Research requires a paid plan, per Anthropic's support center.
Check the plan page on the day you buy.
What none of them do well
- Paywalled and private data. They mostly read the open web. Industry reports behind paywalls, your own sales data and local knowledge are often missing unless you supply them.
- Citation accuracy. A cited link doesn't guarantee the source says what the report claims. Open the link and find the sentence.
- Freshness. Prices, regulations and product details change. Reports can mix old and new pages without saying which is which.
- Judgment. They summarize what's published; they don't know your customers. Use the report as research notes, not a decision.
A simple check routine helps: highlight every number and named claim, open its source, and delete anything you can't confirm.
Limitations
This comparison is based on official documentation read on 7 October 2026, not on running identical briefs through each tool. We make no claims about which is most accurate. Allowances and plan names change frequently.
FAQ
What is deep research in ChatGPT?
Deep research is a ChatGPT mode that spends several minutes searching and reading many web sources, then writes a structured report with citations. It's meant for questions that would take you hours of browsing, not quick lookups.
Which deep research tool is most accurate?
No vendor publishes a neutral, comparable accuracy figure, and accuracy depends heavily on the topic and how well sources cover it. Whichever tool you use, open the cited sources for any fact you plan to rely on.
Is Gemini Deep Research free?
Google offers Deep Research in the Gemini app, and its help pages say free users may find it unavailable during periods of high demand. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers get higher limits for research reports.
Conclusion
Start with the deep research tool in the assistant you already use, and run one real question you'd otherwise spend an afternoon on. Then spend 20 minutes checking its citations. If that check keeps turning up errors on your topics, try a second tool on the same question before paying for an upgrade.
